Scholarships

Below you will find a list of the current scholarships that are available to students in the Department of English. Please note that most scholarships and awards have terms that must be met, noted in the text below each award. 

Awards and terms can change over time as donor agreements are amended, so please make sure to check with the scholarship office for the most recent information.

Jessie O'Kelly Award Fund

$675 prize for the Freshman Essay Contest. Open to students enrolled in English 1013,1013H, and 1023, 1023H. Judges will determine two first prizes, two second prizes, and honorable mentions, often noted as two third and fourth prizes for the best essays written in each course, for each semester.

G.V.G. 'Tori' Saunders Award in English and History

$475 award, available to English majors in odd years. This is an award that acknowledges significant academic achievement by an undergraduate senior. One time award.

Marie Thompson Carson and Eva Clark Thompson Endowed Scholarship

$1,200 award, available to English Majors in their Freshman year. Applicants must demonstrate financial need and distinguished academic ability. Applicants must also be a resident of Arkansas County or county which borders Arkansas County (Phillips, Monroe, Prairie, Lonoke, Jefferson, Lincoln, Desha). This award is intended to be a full scholarship for tuition, room and board, and books, awarded to a recipient that has no other scholarships. Renewable only for the sophomore year.

Leo and Nola Van Scyoc Award in English

$6,000 award, available to Senior English majors who are planning to teach in public school and have academically distinguished themselves.

The Mary Jane See Adamson Scholarship Endowment

$12,000 award, available to an undergraduate, full-time, declared major of English. Applicants must have a minimum GPA of 3.0, must be an Arkansas resident, and demonstrate financial need. This award is renewable until graduation if all criteria are met. Awardable to both Undergrad / Graduate Students.
